New feature: Tag filtering

You’ve been able to enter tags on posts for a while using the “Show advanced options” link. Most people use tags to indicate categories or topics, such as vacation, music, photography.

Today, we’ve added two new ways to use tags:

Tags can now be displayed for each post in your theme (see the Custom Theme reference’s new Tags section). You can link to URLs that look like this:

http://staff.tumblr.com/tagged/features

…where you can replace features with your tag name and use underscores to separate multiple words in a tag, like new_tumblr_features. Underscores in the URL are interpreted as spaces in the name, so that tag would actually be entered as "new tumblr features".

The standard view shows posts in reverse-chronological order (latest posts on top), like your tumblelog’s front page. If you want the opposite (earliest posts on top), you can append /chrono to any tag URL to display the posts in chronological order, like this:

http://staff.tumblr.com/tagged/features/chrono

It’s a great way to present all posts relevant to a certain event or a category (e.g. "photography tips").

You can link to these URLs in your Description for commonly used tags, or you can link each post to its tags using the new Custom Theme variables.

Theme designers: Notes are now available in tumblelogs

We’re about to start rolling out a bunch of features focused on interaction between tumblelog authors and their readers. Post notes are going to be the glue for all of this interaction, so we’d like to ask all theme designers (and anyone with custom themes) to incorporate this new tag:

This will render the post’s notes (including reblogs and likes) on their permalink pages. Check out an example on my tumblelog.

Unlike our other theme tags, this outputs generic HTML markup, so all you need to do is style it with CSS. Here’s a basic stylesheet to get you started:

Regardless, we’ve got a new Tumblr app out today that takes advantage of iOS 8’s improved sharing features. Make a photo post right from your Photos app, for example. Or a link post right from Safari. Couldn’t be easier.
Also: Posts are now the full width of the screen. That means photos are 3% larger than before. Sounds like a little, feels like a lot.

In our continued quest to make your mobile Tumblr experience sick as hell, we’ve updated our iOS and Android apps with a host of fixes, features, and improvements. Notable new things include:

Notifications get a slick new thingy.
Find blogs to follow through your contacts or Facebook.
Your friends can now sign up right inside the app.
Track tags that you find amazing. (Android already had this.)
Fast reblog when no words are needed. (Just click and hold the reblog icon.)
