Hey. It’s Pride Month!

Over the next 30 days, we are actively encouraging you to share your LGBTQ+ pride with all of Tumblr. You deserve to be proud of who you are 365 days a year, but these next 30 days, we’re going all out. There’s no wrong way to do it. Upload an illustration. Write a poem. Make a GIF. Take a selfie and slap a Pride sticker on it. Maybe send a sticker to a friend. These precious babies are in your app right now:

image

Do one thing, do 100 things—whatever feels right. Just tag it with #TumblrPride so other people can find it. And, hey, if you can’t do any of these things, know that we still support you. You have every reason to feel proud this month, even if you aren’t ready to show it. <3

We’ll also be signal boosting other influential LGBTQ+ voices all month long. We’ve secured some really amazing people for Answer Time and Issue Time:

  • 6/23—Gavin Grimm, 17 year old activist fighting for the equality of transgender students, held on Action (@action).
  • 6/29—Becca McCharen, queer fashion designer and founder of fashion label Chromat (@chromat).
  • 6/30—Trans Rights & Community, focusing on urgent issues that affect trans people, like violence, access to health care, and unemployment, held on Action (@action).

Have a safe and beautiful Pride Month, Tumblr.

And we’re back.

A lot has happened:

  • (Music) Support for both Ariana Grande (No. 1) and Manchester came pouring in after the attack that took place at her concert. Our hearts go out to everyone who was there that night.
  • (Television) Twin Peaks (No. 14) returns to the Black Lodge after a mere two and a half decades.
  • (K-Pop) Sistar is breaking up, and people are not happy. When they find out they’re at No. 12, will they stay together?
  • (Video Games) Pokémon: Magikarp Jump (No. 6) is a new mobile game where you grow Magikarp and teach them to jump. That’s, uh, that’s about it.
  • (Movies) Dirty Dancing (No. 19) did a remake, but it seems fans are only here for the original.
  • (Web Stuff) Anna Akana’s Answer Time got her a debut at No. 14.
  • (Music) We know Nicki Minaj refuses pickle juice, but how does she feel about coming back at No. 15?

Star Wars had a big week, even for Star Wars. Vanity Fair (@vanityfair) celebrated the franchise’s 40th anniversary with a special edition cover and a brand new photo series. This led to a huge influx people and entities relating to the Star Wars franchise:

31 days of Mental Health Month have come and just about gone. Tumblr, thank you for sharing your stories. Thank you for reading the stories of your peers. Without you—all of you—Post it Forward would not be the beautiful, caring community it is today.

Though we reblogged a lot of the art that was created this month, we wanted to end on a particular high note and highlight just a few more pieces in a special post.

There was no shortage of inspo:

Mental Health Month may have been limited to, well, May, but it doesn’t mean our efforts stop in June. Post it Forward is always here as your hub for sharing stories and finding a support system with others who might be going through the same things you are.  So keep sharing if you can, keep reading, and keep up all of the amazing work we’ve seen so far.  And please always remember, there are resources out there if things ever get too hard. <3

Take care of yourself, Tumblr. You deserve it.

Tumblr is a bottomless pit, neither good nor evil. In one version of the myth, Tumblr is a reservoir of original unfinished creation. The rest of the Internet is irrigated by rivers and streams of human attention that flow from Tumblr.”

Fandometrics In Depth: Overwatch Edition

thefandometrics

One year ago today, Overwatch was released by Blizzard Entertainment. The game had an immediate and overwhelming impact on Tumblr, and the #overwatch tag was quickly flooded with animated shorts, comics, fan art, and, of course, toddler approval of Junkrat.

To mark this anniversary of this game-to-end-all-games, we’ve analyzed millions of posts from May 23, 2016—May 18, 2017 to precisely identify the most talked about Overwatch characters and ships. Enjoy.

Overwatch is huge

During this 358 day period, the #overwatch tag alone garnered nearly 150 million engagements. It was the second most trending tag during this time. That’s trendier than every TV show and film, and even bigger, more generic tags like #GIF (No. 5) and #art (No. 7). The next highest trending video game-related tag was #Pokémon, at No. 20.

Overwatch made its debut on the Fandometrics Video Games list on March 14th, 2016 at No. 16, more than two months before the game was even released. On May 9, 2016 Overwatch jumped a solid ten spots to No. 2. The following week, it was No. 1.  It reigned supreme until July 11th, 2016, when it was kicked out by Pokémon Go. Currently Overwatch has had a 29-week streak at No. 1, beating the previous record for time at the top of the Video Games list by two months (and counting). Undertale topped off at just 21 weeks.

New paint colors invented by neural network

lewisandquark

So if you’ve ever picked out paint, you know that every infinitesimally different shade of blue, beige, and gray has its own descriptive, attractive name. Tuscan sunrise, blushing pear, Tradewind, etc… There are in fact people who invent these names for a living. But given that the human eye can see millions of distinct colors, sooner or later we’re going to run out of good names. Can AI help?

For this experiment, I gave the neural network a list of about 7,700 Sherwin-Williams paint colors along with their RGB values. (RGB = red, green, and blue color values) Could the neural network learn to invent new paint colors and give them attractive names?

One way I have of checking on the neural network’s progress during training is to ask it to produce some output using the lowest-creativity setting. Then the neural network plays it safe, and we can get an idea of what it has learned for sure.

By the first checkpoint, the neural network has learned to produce valid RGB values - these are colors, all right, and you could technically paint your walls with them. It’s a little farther behind the curve on the names, although it does seem to be attempting a combination of the colors brown, blue, and gray.

By the second checkpoint, the neural network can properly spell green and gray. It doesn’t seem to actually know what color they are, however.

Let’s check in with what the more-creative setting is producing.

…oh, okay.

Later in the training process, the neural network is about as well-trained as it’s going to be (perhaps with different parameters, it could have done a bit better - a lot of neural network training involves choosing the right training parameters). By this point, it’s able to figure out some of the basic colors, like white, red, and grey:

Although not reliably.

In fact, looking at the neural network’s output as a whole, it is evident that:

  1. The neural network really likes brown, beige, and grey.
  2. The neural network has really really bad ideas for paint names.

1. @lewisandquark is doing brilliant things with neural networks. 2. You should probably take this opportunity to tag yourself.

Incredibly sad and angry about what just happened in Manchester last night.

I can’t even begin to imagine the fear, devastation and heartache that many parents and families are going through right now.

It’s lifting to see the Manchester community coming together but I wish it didn’t have to be from a tragedy like this. I pray for the patience and strength for everyone affected.

It’s week four of Mental Health Month, Tumblr! We hope you’ve enjoyed the post prompts and all of the wonderful works of love that they generated. The month may be ending, but that doesn’t mean that sharing your stories and spreading awareness for mental health has to end, too. That’s why this week is all about posting it for the future 👉

  • Post a photo or GIF of yourself with a positive message that you can look back on anytime you need. Toss a Mental Health Month sticker on it.
  • Make a list of things you can do to make life better for future you.
  • Write a chat post between the person you are now and the person you would like to become.
  • Write down one thing you like about yourself and schedule it to be published on your Tumblr one month from now.
  • The future starts…now. Share one thing you plan to cross off your to-do list today, and then do it!
  • Make a list of things you’re looking forward to in the future.
  • The Ultimate Positivity Post. Fill it up with everything that makes you happy. Reblog it whenever you’re feeling down.

Do one of them. Do all of them. Do none of them and instead make up your own methods of bringing awareness to the importance of mental health. Whatever you do, just tag it with #postitforward so others can see your post as part of the bigger message.

Keep looking out for each other, Tumblr.

And oh, hey, here’s the last of our upcoming Mental Health Month-themed Answer Times:
