Hello, World: Meet Bryan
Bryan is one of the engineers responsible for the Tumblr iOS App that everybody is talking about. We dropped by his workstation to get the scoop on the app’s development and to learn more about the guy who helps make it happen.
What’s the last feature you pushed?
Here’s a little feature I snuck in that I quite like, it provides a shortcut for creating link posts from the mobile Safari browser.
The last bug you fixed?
I am constantly making sure that images don’t fall on subpixel boundaries. The iPad mini (with its non-retina screen) really doesn’t like that.
Any other blogs you run?
My favorite is Artisanshit. It really bothers me that just about every restaurant and coffee shop nowadays describes their fare as “artisanal,” so I’ve been posting pictures of signs/menus/etc. whenever I find them, and a few friends have started to help. It’s way too easy once you start looking.
I also reblog anything iOS-related to ios.tumblr.com and write about the fun (and not so fun) parts of building iOS applications at cocoa.tumblr.com.
Any Tumblr tricks you can share??
Yes! There are a bunch of gestures built into the app. Here are some you may not know about:
- Slide across GIFs to animate them frame-by-frame
- Slide the new post button up to quickly post a photo
- Slide the new post button left to quickly make a text post
- Tap-and-hold the reblog button to fast reblog a post
- Swipe right to pop back to the previous screen
We’ve been hard at work on some great updates and I’m really excited to be able to share them soon. Making it easier to discover great new Tumblr posts, blogs, and tags is something we’re really focused on. Stay tuned!
