As we continue to grow, more and more professional publishers are flocking to Tumblr to share their voice. This means that Jacob and Peter have had the pleasure of designing blogs for everyone from rockstars, to action movies, to the President of the United States.
It’s no secret that you guys are awesomely talented, and there are a lot more of you than are of us. So we’re opening these projects up to you with something new called Tumblr Projects.
Our goal is to connect professional studios, brands, and publishers, looking to create something great, with brilliant designers and developers who can help them do it.
We’re super excited to open these previously behind-the-scenes projects up to the community that continues to inspire everything we do. We can’t wait to work with you!
The introduction to this week’s Tumblr Tuesday will be back shortly. We’re making some changes to the infrastructure of this introduction, and it may be unavailable for a few minutes. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience. Please check back soon.
The Footnotes of Mad Men
Apparently there’s this television show that at least a few hundred people watch every week about these men who are very mad. I’m still not sure what they’re so mad about. It takes place in 1960s and is set in New York City, which seems pretty nice to me. I mean, they’re not living in the Dark Ages, are they? I just can’t get behind needless anger. At least, that was until I found The Footnotes of Mad Men. Now I’m more in touch with my anger. It’s really healthy. Here: I need a fucking television! Ahh, I feel better already.
What no one told you about Pakistan
Way back before the internet became whatever it is today, I thought it could usher in a new level of understanding between disparate cultures from around the globe. I thought, “hey, we’ll be able to just talk to each other, and we’ll find out that no matter our differences, we’re all just human beings.” This turned out to be one of the most naive thoughts I ever had, but Tumblr blogs like What no one told you about Pakistan are doing their best to redeem me. Good luck, peeps!
Carnivorous Plants!
The exclamation mark in the title is what pushed this over the top for me. Granted, plants that freaking eat things are badass enough in their own right, but this is Tumblr Tuesday. We have high standards here. A plant that can and will eat you slowly (needs verification) is indeed so cool of a concept that I can barely keep from passing out, but I can’t shake that beautifully-used exclamation mark. These things are bloody awesome and this Tumblr user knows it.
Fuck Yeah Gadgets
Gadget porn, without those pesky articles that just get in the way. There’s something ingenious about the presentation here: Photos, stark background, almost no text. I find myself looking at these gadgets as pieces of art, unconcerned with how many gigabytes this has or how much that will cost. No, what FYG is about is simply taking a step back and appreciating excellent industrial design.
It’s Full of Stars
Space is freaking awesome. Your argument is invalid. More to the point: This Tumblr blog chronicles our species’ fascination with the universe at large. From the science of space exploration to artistic expressions of what we can only imagine, It’s Full of Stars covers it all. Also, space shark. Discussion over.
And you? What are some other Tumblr blogs that you are loving these days?
This is addictive.
Welcome to the revamped Popular page, featuring Tumblr Wire.
Wire pulls posts in realtime from across Tumblr, and has already become the single biggest distraction at Tumblr HQ.
We’re also featuring Trending Tags that have seen increasing activity over the last 48 hours.
Enjoy!
Under Construction
We’re pushing a whole bunch of interface tweaks over the next couple weeks. Don’t be frightened! Some buttons and links might be out of place before everything is done.
Please let us know if you see anything acting funny.
Starting today, themes you add on your Manage Themes page can be immediately shared and installed by Tumblr users. Just click “Share this theme” for a permalink to distribute. There will only be a short delay before the theme is featured in the Theme Garden.
Did everybody have a nice weekend? Summer’s last hurrah? Now, now, don’t be too sad. Technically, Summer doesn’t end until September 22 at 5:18pm EDT. Hmm. I wonder if anything will spontaneously happen right at that moment. Will sunburns miraculously heal? Will sharks mysteriously stop being awesome? Will people suddenly realize that Bud Light Lime tastes horrible? So many questions. Only time will tell.
Until then, please enjoy the latest five picks for Tumblr Tuesday.
The Documentary Group
Here you’ll find descriptions, clips, trailers, and full video of some really great documentaries that you might not have heard of. The large size of this group (33 Tumblr users and counting) makes for diverse interests — there are documentary films here on topics as far-ranging as music, filmmaking, politics, religion, and the environment. A word of warning though, you could lose several hours here.
Drawing for a Smile
This is fun! Send your mailing address to this mystery artist and you’ll shortly receive a little drawing made just for you — then, you take a photo of yourself with the drawing (hopefully smiling!) and it gets posted to this site. This is all so sweet it’s starting to make my teeth hurt.
Fuck Yeah Subways
You may think you know exactly what this is all about just based on the title. Actually, you’re probably right. But you’ve likely underestimated how cool it is. No matter where you are in the world, underground transit systems are basically all doing the same thing — it’s when you see them juxtaposed that all the beautiful differences come to light. (Notables are Stockholm, Moscow, and Tokyo.)
Old Hollywood
This Tumblr blog covers cinema from 1900 to 1970 through a vast collection of still images, commentary, and audio clips. The Alfred Hitchcock tag is worth perusing if you’re a fan, as are the Literary Adaptations, Cary Grant, and Katharine Hepburn tags.
I Love Charts
Before today, I wasn’t aware that I possessed within me such a strong desire for good charts. Oh, but there’s no denying it now: I love charts. I love these charts so much, I want to take them behind the middle school and get ‘em pregnant. Hmm, that’s a bit hyperbolic even for me, but still: Nice charts, guys. Woo.
Now it’s your turn! What are some other Tumblr blogs that you recommend?
