Unlocking The Limited Edition Black Dashboard

Thank you to everyone who donated to Save Our Gulf this week! I’m afraid we can’t match any more contributions, but if you’d still like to donate and unlock the Limited Edition Black Dashboard preference, we’re leaving a donation page up through the weekend.

It's Tumblr Tuesday!

Greetings, Tumblr! I’m here with the most recent batch of Tumblr blogs to have earned their rightful place in history as official Tumblr Tuesday designees. They will each get a trophy for their awesomeness! (A magical invisible trophy, no less!)

HTML5 Watch
This Tumblelog is dedicated to collecting examples of awesome uses of new web technologies like HTML5 and CSS3. They’re watching the future of the web so you don’t have to.

Paste Your Face: A Public Arts Project
A project based in Portland to replace images of celebrities and models found in public places with images of the people who actually inhabit the community.

Men And Their Dogs
So, it’s a blog with nothing but photos of dogs and the men who love them. Nothing else really needs to be said here, so I’ll just tell you that I miss my little dog sometimes.

You’ve Escaped
Anaïs Escobar is entirely a girl and mostly a writer. This is her Tumblelog.

Sea Lust
When you’re feeling too far away from the ocean, come here. Unlike the actual ocean, this Tumblr blog isn’t filling up with oil.

It's Tumblr Tuesday!

Happy Tuesday, everyone! It’s the day where I pick out five Tumblrs of distinction, where you all beg for recommendations from each other, and where we all prepare for tomorrow’s gratuitous photos of ourselves. Let’s do this thing!

Passed Out On Public Transportation
A photo series of commuters: the tired, the overworked, the partied.

Mammalingo
A mother’s dictionary with entries regarding pregnancy, parenting, and, of course, poop.

The World We Live In
An exemplary photoblog featuring the beauty found in every corner of our world.

By the Gods!
An adventure through the ancient tomes that formed our world through the comparative exploration of myth and theology.

thisislife
The writings of Elijah Teitelbaum, a bit of music, and some pictures as well.

It's Tumblr Tuesday!

I’ve picked out some amazing Tumblrs for you today. Truly, you better stand back. Not that far, you can’t read the screen now. Okay, perfect! Here we go…

Animated Albums
A mad genius starts with regular old boring album art and, through what I can only assume is the use of black magic, transforms them into an animated journey into an album art wonderland.

Fuck Yeah Condiments
Here you’ll get all the latest condiment news. (There’s news about condiments?) Hell yes there’s news about condiments. And reviews, and photos, and old advertisements, too.

Things I Ate That I Love
Emily Gould is the type of person who’s not afraid to post photos of cats on a blog called Things I Ate That I Love. I respect that. Also of note: She’s giving away 10 copies of her book, And The Heart Says Whatever, in a contest today.

Trivia Tuesday
Tuesdays at 1pm EST. A question. Answer with Tumblr’s Ask feature. Wednesday at 1pm EST. They pick a winner. A winner could be you!

STFU, Parents
Ah, Facebook. It helps you connect with old friends, it lets you find people who share your interests, and it allows parents to update you on the status of their baby on a minute-by-minute basis. Some feel that this is a perfectly appropriate use of this technology. The author of this blog does not.

It's Tumblr Tuesday!

I’m a huge fan of every single blog on Tumblr. Unfortunately, they’ll only let me pick five for each Tumblr Tuesday. (It’s a union thing.) It’ll probably take a while to get to everyone, so in the meantime please think about a puppy standing on pancakes and enjoy these Tumblrs. Thank you!

Eye On Springfield
A retrospective of Simpsons hilarity spanning from seasons 1 to 9, when it was still funny. With your host, Kent Brockman!

Photojojo ♥s Tumblr
They say Photography + Awesome = Photojojo. I propose an alternative: Photojojo + Tumblr = Extra awesome.

OBI Scrapbook Blog
An archive of illustrations, because Photoshop apparently didn’t exist in the 19th century. Check their archive page for a nice view of things.

Wipe Your Feet
Tess Lynch is an actor and writer living in Los Angeles. Her work has appeared all over the place, but her Tumblr blog is by far the best thing she’s ever done and will ever do.

Dear Meat
A collection of user-submitted open letters about every topic imaginable. The first one was about meat, thus the name, but the rest are about things like Katy Perry, Shoes, and Nutella.

Greetings and happy Tumblr Tuesday, everyone! You know the drill: Add your favorite blog to the Tumblr Directory now!

The Big Caption
The Big Caption compliments The Big Picture with jokes and statements using creative typography.

Shit My Kids Ruined
A collection of photos of the shit your kids ruined. Couches, TVs, and dreams…

Stevemail
Stevemail catalogs the hilariously terse emails sent by Apple CEO Steve Jobs to customers who are lucky to get a response at all.

48 States, 50 Days
Greg Lockwood is gearing up for a little drive through all 48 contiguous United States over the summer, and he’s documenting everything here.

Newspaper Blackout
A place for sharing Newspaper Blackout Poems, which are made my redacting words from newspaper articles with a permanent marker.

New theme variable transformation: URLEncoded

You can now prefix any theme variable with “URLEncoded” to output a URL encoded string. This should make it easier to integrate third-party widgets like Digg, or Facebook’s new Like Button.

It's Tumblr Tuesday!

NASA’s Space Shuttle program will be retired later this year to make room for the next big thing, and it got me thinking about the fact that somebody’s eventually going to make the first Tumblr group blog in space. I just hope it’s for something relevant like videos of people experiencing weightlessness and not a bunch of cute photos of pandas, but either way… it’ll be huge.

Here are today’s Tumblr Tuesday picks:

Phone Funeral
A memorial for cellphones that met their doom in tragically violent accidents. In lieu of flowers, please send strong iPhone cases.

Fake Science
Finally, a place with straightforward and common-sense answers to all of the greatest mysteries of science!

Vintage Madison Ave.
I know these ads are vintage because everyone looks exactly the same and not a single model appears to be malnourished.

Big Damn Deal
A new twice-weekly webcomic about a San Francisco startup with an identity crisis.

Marina Abramović Made Me Cry
Performance artist Marina Abramović’s current exhibit at MoMA has her sitting in silence while museum guests sit across from her and stare. Some people couldn’t handle the heat.

We just added three new theme variable transformations:

Plaintext. Prefix any theme variable with “Plaintext” to output the string with HTML-tags stripped and appropriate characters converted to HTML-entities (so they’re safe to include in HTML attributes, etc.).
<a href="{URL}" title="{PlaintextName}">{Name}</a>

Javascript. Prefix any theme variable with “JS” to output a Javascript string (wrapped in quotes).
var description = {JSDescription};

Javascript Plaintext. Prefix any theme variable with “JSPlaintext” to output a Javascript string (wrapped in quotes) with HTML-tags stripped and appropriate characters converted to HTML-entities.
var description = {JSPlaintextDescription};

It's Tumblr Tuesday!

Hey there, Tumblr! The world rejoiced earlier today as flights in Europe were finally cleared in the wake of the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland. Unfortunately, there seems to be another large plume of smoke gathering in the atmosphere all around the world right now which may impede visibility, hamper concentration, and increase the consumptions of snacks. Happy April 20th.

And now, my favorite Tumblr blogs of the moment:

Doggie Drawings
Artist Lili Chin creates amazingly cute pet portraits in order to raise funds for her local Boston Terrier rescue.

52 Weeks of UX
A discourse on the process of designing user experiences for real people.

Science Tumbled
Because science works, bitches. The proof is here.

I’m Remembering!
Pop-culture nostalgery from the 80’s & early 90’s. Trust us, this all really happened.

Michael Buble Being Stalked By A Velociraptor
Stalker? That’s a bit harsh. This Velociraptor has waited 75 million years for Canadian singer-songwriter Michael Buble to exist. He’s just a big fan.

It's Tumblr Tuesday!

Howdy, Tumblr! The intertubes are abuzz with the latest Conan O’Brien news today, but I bet you’re having trouble sorting through all the complexities in this story. To help, I’d like to present the latest Team Coco news as translated into Tumblrese:

TBS said they’d start reblogging Conan four times a week as soon as his ban expires. To thank all his followers, Conan is hosting meetups all over the country. George Lopez hit the like button.

And now, the Tumblrs you’ve been waiting for:

Picture Quotes
Noteworthy quotations accompanied with pictures of the authors. The simplicity is utterly effective.

House of Buttons
A collection of great UI buttons spotted in the wild and preserved here for your enjoyment and inspiration.

Eating off the People’s Princess
So, there’s this plate with Diana, Princess of Wales, on it. And then there’s food. And this really isn’t weird at all.

The Project Gutenberg Project
Compelling excerpts from Project Gutenberg’s archive of over 30,000 free ebooks.

X Planes
Experimental aircraft, exotic aeromachines, and other aerial oddities.

(Psst… Don’t forget about our t-shirt contest.)

Hipster Puppies is making a book!  → hipsterpuppies.tumblr.com

Congratulations are in order for hipsterpuppies, the latest in what is approaching a regular tradition of Tumblr-to-book deals. Christopher Weingarten, the boy behind the blog, has posted an open call for “pupster” photos, but he wants you to remember, “No cats. Seriously, fuck cats.”

It's Tumblr Tuesday!

Greetings and happy Tumblr Tuesday, everyone. Big day today: I finally got to play with an iPad! It was everything I hoped it would be. Actually, it was more than that. The internet looks amazing on it, which means that all of you look amazing on it. I had no idea you all were so attractive. And, uh, I was just curious if you’re doing anything later. Let’s start a group Tumblr, just you and me.

Here’s my picks for this week:

Landing Pad
A showcase of beautiful iPad app design. Warning: Viewing this site on an actual iPad might cause the universe to implode.

Daily Seinfeld
A Tumblelog about nothing. Screencaps, quotes, and yada yada yada from the best show ever.

Google Voice Transcriptions
Google Voice’s transcription feature is either a technological marvel or the nonsensical rantings of a madman. It’s not important which.

Things My Date Really Said Last Night
On future dates, all I’m saying are statements quoted directly from this website, because that’s how you win at the internet.

Laughing Squid
The fine people at Laughing Squid use their Tumblr to share all the best stuff they find on the interwebs.
