We launched Tumblr with a boilerplate Terms of Service that we never felt truly captured our company’s philosophy. We’re determined to be the best place for everyone in the world to share the things they love and create. In keeping up with that motto, we felt like it was time for a little update and clarification in our Terms of Service. Two key points:
- You own and control what you share on Tumblr - and we want your experience here to be perfect.
- You’re free to remove any of your content or delete your account at any time. If you do, your content remains your own and we’ll do our best to promptly remove it from Tumblr.
We want Tumblr to be a place where creativity, originality, and sharing are embraced and we hope we’ve crafted a Terms of Service that makes everyone comfortable and happy. Like everything we launch, this is still a work in progress, and we’d love to hear your feedback. If you have any thoughts or questions, please don’t hesitate to let us know!
Welcome to the 10th Tumblr Tuesday! Every week, I’ll be here to call your attention to some of the best Tumblr blogs we’ve come across lately. You’re making things really easy for me with all the amazing ideas and awesome content that you guys are… What’s that you say? Oh noes!
Apparently, some government agency has a problem with the F-bomb I dropped in last week’s episode. There might be a hefty fine. Protests. Disciplinary action.
I can do better. Just watch!
Food In Real Life
Food never ends up looking like it does on the box or menu, yet it’s always advertised as a fluffed and photoshopped model of unattainable perfection. Why is that? Would it really be so awful to show off what an Egg McMuffin looks like in real life? Exactly! This Tumblr blog preaches truth to the packaging.
My Parents Were Awesome
Despite all the odds, you actually turned out to be pretty cool. To achieve this feat, it’s only logical to assume that your parents were the most super awesome people ever. My Parents Were Awesome documents this eternal truth.
F@#& Yeah Ghost Towns
There’s something intriguing about ghost towns. The way nature takes back the land, the calamity that destroyed an entire community, the fact that you simply cannot get a cab, period. FYGT chronicles places that were left behind through a collection of beautiful photography.
100 Jdates
Oh, internet! The invention of online dating sites forever changed the way millions of people find mates. Genius. What’s even more entertaining? People using the internet to share stories about the spectacularly horrible dates that the aforementioned dating sites have enabled.
Eat Sleep Draw!
ESD is an online art community that features original content submitted by thousands of contributors from across the globe. Submit your drawings, doodles, paintings, or sketches and be a part of something special. Personally, I’m holding off all my submissions until they end their misguided ban on interpretive dance pieces.
Yay, I fucking did it!
What about you? What are some other Tumblr blogs that you’re loving?
Listen Tumblr, I’m going to let you finish, but this Tumblr Tuesday is the best Tumblr Tuesday of the year…
Wow, that was a week too late. I want to apologize on behalf of everyone at Tumblr for my lapse in judgement there. Here are five awesome Tumblr blogs to clear your palette.
Stuff My Girlfriend Says
This guy’s girlfriend says the funniest things. She’s hilarious, witty, and wise. Honestly, I wonder why she’s not with a better guy. I mean, I don’t know anything about this dude, but I know he’s not the Editorial Director at Tumblr. Lose the zero and get with the hero, honey.
Fuck Yeah Classical
Classical music fucking rocks. I could say more, but it would just be a stream of nonsensical F-bombs that don’t have anything to do with classical fucking music.
One Drawing Every Day
The proprietor of this Tumblr blog aims to draw something every day. But wait! Today is Tuesday, and the most recent post is from Saturday. Excuse me? This is not one drawing every day, sir or madam. I hope the massive influx of attention you get from this will motivate you to stay on schedule from now on. You’re welcome!
Art in my coffee!
Hey, these are pretty! My coffee never comes this way. I think it’s because I only drink iced coffee from Starbucks. But it’s moot anyway: As a slave to the corporate coffee machine, I don’t actually know what art is.
Keggers of Yore
Now, before you say anything, I’m not advocating drinking, or having fun, or living in the 70s. Goodness no! I view this site regularly as a personal reminder to not do any of those things. Know why? Because I don’t want to end up on a website just like this one in twenty years.
What about you? What are some other Tumblr blogs that you’re crushing on lately?
Want to come work for us? (Hint: It’s awesome.)
- Systems Engineer: Design, implement, and maintain a scalable, Linux-based infrastructure for Tumblr’s rapidly growing community.
- Web Application Developer: Help make Tumblr the greatest place for everyone in the world to share the things they love and create.
We’re a small company where everyone has their voice heard, and we want people working here who know and love Tumblr and can help us make it even better. Most of our team has come from the Tumblr community, including Marc, Jacob, Peter, Topherchris, and Meaghan.
We’ve had great luck hiring from the community so far, and we’d love to continue this tradition with our next coworkers. Does one of these sound like your dream job? Please get in touch.
Note: Applicants must be willing to relocate to New York City. These are full-time positions in our office. No telecommuting. We know that moving is a lot of work, but afterward, you’ll be in New York City. That magical place with the great bagels and real pizza where half of the cars are yellow. How cool is that?
The introduction to this week’s Tumblr Tuesday will be back shortly. We’re making some changes to the infrastructure of this introduction, and it may be unavailable for a few minutes. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience. Please check back soon.
The Footnotes of Mad Men
Apparently there’s this television show that at least a few hundred people watch every week about these men who are very mad. I’m still not sure what they’re so mad about. It takes place in 1960s and is set in New York City, which seems pretty nice to me. I mean, they’re not living in the Dark Ages, are they? I just can’t get behind needless anger. At least, that was until I found The Footnotes of Mad Men. Now I’m more in touch with my anger. It’s really healthy. Here: I need a fucking television! Ahh, I feel better already.
What no one told you about Pakistan
Way back before the internet became whatever it is today, I thought it could usher in a new level of understanding between disparate cultures from around the globe. I thought, “hey, we’ll be able to just talk to each other, and we’ll find out that no matter our differences, we’re all just human beings.” This turned out to be one of the most naive thoughts I ever had, but Tumblr blogs like What no one told you about Pakistan are doing their best to redeem me. Good luck, peeps!
Carnivorous Plants!
The exclamation mark in the title is what pushed this over the top for me. Granted, plants that freaking eat things are badass enough in their own right, but this is Tumblr Tuesday. We have high standards here. A plant that can and will eat you slowly (needs verification) is indeed so cool of a concept that I can barely keep from passing out, but I can’t shake that beautifully-used exclamation mark. These things are bloody awesome and this Tumblr user knows it.
Fuck Yeah Gadgets
Gadget porn, without those pesky articles that just get in the way. There’s something ingenious about the presentation here: Photos, stark background, almost no text. I find myself looking at these gadgets as pieces of art, unconcerned with how many gigabytes this has or how much that will cost. No, what FYG is about is simply taking a step back and appreciating excellent industrial design.
It’s Full of Stars
Space is freaking awesome. Your argument is invalid. More to the point: This Tumblr blog chronicles our species’ fascination with the universe at large. From the science of space exploration to artistic expressions of what we can only imagine, It’s Full of Stars covers it all. Also, space shark. Discussion over.
And you? What are some other Tumblr blogs that you are loving these days?
Starting today, themes you add on your Manage Themes page can be immediately shared and installed by Tumblr users. Just click “Share this theme” for a permalink to distribute. There will only be a short delay before the theme is featured in the Theme Garden.
Did everybody have a nice weekend? Summer’s last hurrah? Now, now, don’t be too sad. Technically, Summer doesn’t end until September 22 at 5:18pm EDT. Hmm. I wonder if anything will spontaneously happen right at that moment. Will sunburns miraculously heal? Will sharks mysteriously stop being awesome? Will people suddenly realize that Bud Light Lime tastes horrible? So many questions. Only time will tell.
Until then, please enjoy the latest five picks for Tumblr Tuesday.
The Documentary Group
Here you’ll find descriptions, clips, trailers, and full video of some really great documentaries that you might not have heard of. The large size of this group (33 Tumblr users and counting) makes for diverse interests — there are documentary films here on topics as far-ranging as music, filmmaking, politics, religion, and the environment. A word of warning though, you could lose several hours here.
Drawing for a Smile
This is fun! Send your mailing address to this mystery artist and you’ll shortly receive a little drawing made just for you — then, you take a photo of yourself with the drawing (hopefully smiling!) and it gets posted to this site. This is all so sweet it’s starting to make my teeth hurt.
Fuck Yeah Subways
You may think you know exactly what this is all about just based on the title. Actually, you’re probably right. But you’ve likely underestimated how cool it is. No matter where you are in the world, underground transit systems are basically all doing the same thing — it’s when you see them juxtaposed that all the beautiful differences come to light. (Notables are Stockholm, Moscow, and Tokyo.)
Old Hollywood
This Tumblr blog covers cinema from 1900 to 1970 through a vast collection of still images, commentary, and audio clips. The Alfred Hitchcock tag is worth perusing if you’re a fan, as are the Literary Adaptations, Cary Grant, and Katharine Hepburn tags.
I Love Charts
Before today, I wasn’t aware that I possessed within me such a strong desire for good charts. Oh, but there’s no denying it now: I love charts. I love these charts so much, I want to take them behind the middle school and get ‘em pregnant. Hmm, that’s a bit hyperbolic even for me, but still: Nice charts, guys. Woo.
Now it’s your turn! What are some other Tumblr blogs that you recommend?
Hey guys. I’m sick. I don’t mean “crazy, cool, insane.” I mean I’m ailing. Some of the people at work suggested I ride the subway more often to help build up my immune system, so if you see a cranky dude in a bathrobe and bunny slippers on the 6 train eating chicken soup today, that’d be me. But no matter. The important thing is that we’ll be here for Tumblr Tuesday, every Tuesday until the end of time, no matter what.
Ready? Ready!
Jay Parkinson, MD
Jay Parkinson is the doctor of the future. This MD from Williamsburg, Brooklyn completed residencies in Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine, got a Masters in Public Health, and was named one of the top 10 most creative people in healthcare by Fast Company. Now, Doctor Jay spends his days running the startup he co-founded which aims to connect patients with doctors. And, of course, he writes about all this and more on his Tumblr blog.
Fancy Fast Food
The ingredients: Food ordered from popular fast food restaurants, and nothing else. The recipes: Meticulously documented with photos and video. The end result: Fancy Fast Food. It might still be bad for you, but it looks so good. An extreme food makeover from FFF can turn some Taco Bell into Tacobellini, some McDonald’s into McSteak & Potatoes, and some Burger King into a BK Quiche.
MakingOf Tumblelog
The good people at MakingOf.com bring their fresh look at the process of moviemaking to Tumblr. Co-founded by Natalie Portman, MakingOf champions the art of entertainment creation with news, interviews, and tons of behind-the-scenes content. Also: They’re looking for an intern to help with their Tumblr blog.
Music for Your Coffee
Grab a cup of coffee and press play. Period. Actually, I think this will work with other beverages as well. Let’s try tea. Check. Orange juice? Yes. Smoothy? Yup. Pumpkin Spice Latte… Pumpkin Spice Latte… Weird, nothing’s happening.
Electric Power
Electric vehicles and clean energy are covered with verve over here. A casual perusal will show you some of the hottest cars you’ve ever seen that just happen to run on electricity, while a more in-depth reading will give you tons of info on every facet of the technology of energy efficiency.
Your turn! What are some other Tumblr blogs that people should follow?
