On this final Tuesday of the decade, it might be a good time to take a somber look at where we’ve been, where we’re going, and where we are now. However, since this is Tumblr Tuesday and I’m me, I’m going to give you some whimsical predictions for 2010 instead.
In the coming months, I predict that Tumblr will release a feature to post Haikus in addition to chats and quotes. Tumblarity will be worth more than the dollar, and GPOYW will become a national holiday. Tumblr’s iPhone App will start posting automatically.
Also, somebody is going to start putting Lolcats-style text on something else and it’s going to be humongous. Here and now, the Tumblrs:
My Social Impact
Social media can make a social impact, and this Tumblr blog tracks the progress made.
Animals Dressed as Humans
I thought everyone already knew about this site, but I wound up at a convention last night with a bunch of people who dressed up as animals and they wouldn’t listen to me when I told them they had it backwards.
Fuck yeah, Advertising!
People love clever advertisements these days, which is for the best since they’re infiltrating more and more aspects of our lives. [THIS SPACE FOR RENT]
This is either the best website ever created or it’s not.
This Tumblr blog is dedicated to apologizing for all of the embarrassments, failures, and injustices done by the United States. So far it includes hippies and Dan Quayle, so there’s really no chance this will offend anyone.
Who do you nominate for the next episode of Tumblr Tuesday?
You’re all probably sick of hearing about the small amount of snow New York City received over the weekend. That’s a real shame, because I’m going to talk about it some more. Look, I’ve never seen snow before, so this is a big deal. Plus, all those years in sunny Florida left me with some real misconceptions about how snow works.
First, snow doesn’t just go away. It piles up and waits for someone to come cart it off to the snow globe factory or something. Second, snow gets dirty. It may be beautiful on Day One, but immediately after that it turns into a giant nasty sponge which grabs hold of trash and sometimes even people. And finally, despite the mess, it’s incredibly tempting to jump into a huge pile of snow whilst yelling “Cowabunga, dudes!” Seriously, I can’t make it out of my front door without nearly doing a cannonball in it. The only thing stopping me is the sharks.
The more you know! And now, the Tumblrs you’ve been waiting for:
Interested in science but not excited about all the work involved? Fresh Photons is just the thing for you. You’ll find an infinitely expanding collection of science imagery here. Science is hard! Let’s enjoy pictures!
Succeeds are the opposite of Fails, so they’re kind of like Wins, but they’re much better than Wins because they’re Succeeds.
This Tumblr blog features photographs of where we spend most of our days: work. Spanning several decades and several career disciplines, perhaps there’s even something here to inspire you to do something with your crappy office.
La Cuisine D’Art
A treasure chest filled with beautiful treats of the edible, drinkable, and audible varieties.
Psychology news from a psychotherapist. My favorites are the results of experiments and studies: Doodling helps memory and concentration, the primal connection between smell and episodic memory is mediated by the hippocampus, and reading Tumblr Tuesday makes you more sexually appealing.
I might have missed your favorites, so who do you nominate for the next episode of Tumblr Tuesday?
Welcome to the 20th edition of Tumblr Tuesday! You’re honored to read this right now.
Is everyone getting excited for their Christmas/Winter/New Year’s vacations? Some of you are undoubtedly traveling a great distance to be with friends and family. My holiday plans revolve around continuing to be on Tumblr 24/7 as always, but I’m going to celebrate by using a different browser.
I know! Now, the Tumblrs:
BBQ with Brian and Jason
As two guys travel the country, can they really only eat BBQ? Where will they go? What will they eat? What will their intestines do to get back at them for this? I’ve been promised that these questions, and others, will be answered.
Writers and artists from around the world reflect on the movies that mean something to them: what they love, what they hate, what they can’t stop thinking about. Filmosophy is the place for serious reviews, essays, and discussion on the art of filmmaking. Also, OMFG Meg Ryan Week is happening!
Too Big for Stroller
Thanks to this Tumblr blog, I have a new thing to be annoyed by: Parents who put children who can physically walk into strollers. These people don’t have to work, don’t have to find food, and now you’re telling me they don’t even have to walk? Lazy little bastards.
Ted likes to draw. I like to enjoy his drawings. I think you will, too.
Fuck Yeah, Streetwear
Kids today, with their Dan Fogelberg, their Zima, hula hoops and Pac-Man video games — just look at them here. FY Streetwear has convinced me to replace my entire wardrobe with some hot Nikes. Nothing else, just hundreds of pairs of beautifully colored Nikes. My body may be naked and cold, but by god my feet will be hawt.
Disagree with this list? Who do you nominate for the next episode of Tumblr Tuesday?
We decided to organize some camera statistics from photos uploaded to Tumblr, and it revealed some interesting data:
One of the most surprising results is the dominance of photos taken with Apple’s Photo Booth application, which snaps photos from the built-in webcams in most Macs.
Entry-level SLRs are extremely popular among Tumblr photographers, especially Canon’s Digital Rebel series. The Digital Rebel XTi/400D is our most popular standalone camera. It’s a well-deserved position: the XTi is a great camera for a great price that introduced many people — myself included — to the world of high-quality photography.
Most Canon SLRs also record the Canon lens model used to take each photo:
The first and second are the new and old (respectively) “kit” lenses bundled with most Canon SLRs. The third-place lens, the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, is frequently sold as part of a premium bundle for a few hundred dollars more than the standard kit.
The inexpensive 50mm primes are cumulatively the most popular non-kit lenses. This is also well-deserved: these lenses provide excellent optical quality for very little money.
Many people take photos with their mobile phones. Here’s how the top modern smartphone types break down:
Beyond the expected dominance of iPhone OS and BlackBerry devices, Palm’s webOS (Pre, Pixi) isn’t very popular among Tumblr users, but Android devices are gaining popularity.
But the real surprise was Apple’s role, including Photo Booth, in overall camera brands:
The popularity of Macs and iPhones is powerful enough to make Apple almost as popular as Nikon for Tumblr photography.
Greetings, Tumblr! I hope you’re all busy doing some holiday shopping for your friends, family, and the esteemed editor of Tumblr Tuesday — me. Did you know that the most surefire way to be featured on Tumblr Tuesday is to buy me presents? It’s true. It has absolutely nothing at all to do with your nominations, overall aesthetic, and random chance.
And now, the Tumblrs you’ve been waiting for…
Cure Thrift Shop
The founder of this East Village thrift shop was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 11 years old. Today, Cure Thrift Shop is one of the best thrift experiences in Manhattan, and every sale benefits the Diabetes Research Institute. Also: There’s a special discount for Tumblr users who follow Cure!
Fuck Yeah Crowd Surfing!
If you guessed that this blog was nothing but awesome photos of people crowd surfing at shows, you’d be wrong. Just kidding, you’d be totally right. There’s just no fooling you, smarty pants.
Wordboner is typography with personality. Put another way, WB is your source for inspirational quotes presented in nice fonts using pretty colors. There’s also an online store where you can buy your favorites printed on t-shirts, greeting cards, and kittens.
Old Jews Telling Jokes
They’re old, they’re Jewish, and they’re telling jokes. Each joke-teller brings their own individual talents and at least sixty years of life experience to the material at hand, which is updated every Tuesday and Thursday.
Something For The Ladies
This Tumblr blog bills itself as a showcase of simply phenomenal music, and it doesn’t disappoint. Something For The Ladies has a great layout, takes submissions, and most definitely isn’t just for the ladies.
If you’re like me and use the Gregorian calendar for your date-keeping needs, then you probably woke up this morning and exclaimed “Holy crap, it’s December already!” Strange but true!
For me personally, this date marks the unofficial start of my first ever real winter. You must understand, I’ve lived my entire life in a tropical climate. I’m used to spending winter on a beach with bikini-clad women waving palm fronds in my face. Now that I’m in New York, I’ll have to settle for them using Elm branches instead. So please, keep me in your prayers.
(I’ll prepare an alternate Tumblr Tuesday for any of you in the Southern Hemisphere who are offended by the weather patterns mentioned here.)
Every year, stores around the world become littered with crappy Santas. Beard length, hat placement, belly size, and suit hue are all standards that must be enforced, and this Tumblr blog is on the lookout.
Let’s Be Glad!
We can safely listen to holiday music without retribution now, right? Whew. Let’s Be Glad! posts festive seasonal tracks performed by indie bands. (Whoa, I didn’t say “Christmas” there even once!)
Rocketboom needs no introduction, but you may be unfamiliar with their blog. Rocketboom Blog, meet Tumblr. Tumblr, meet Rocketboom Blog. There! Now we’re all close friends and can go to the zoo together.
One Surrealist a Day One Surrealist a Day, which recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, curates works from the world of surrealism. It features a great theme, precise tagging, and plenty of Salvador Dalí.
